Pacific paradise makes for a seamless stop on the way to North America
The airport
Nadi International Airport (NAN).

The arrival
It’s always fun flying into Fiji’s largest airport, particularly if your destination is one of the country’s 330 tropical isles. This is the first time in 25 plus visits that I’m transiting at the international terminal and heading on to Canada on Fiji Airways’ inaugural Nadi-Vancouver service. There’s just one terminal. It comprises an arrival hall on the left, check-in desks in the middle and security on the right. Set 10 kilometres from the city (OK, calling it a city is a stretch) of Nadi it typically takes around 25 minutes’ drive to reach resorts on Denarau Island and an hour-plus for those on the Coral Coast. Taxis and shuttle transfers (shuttles need to be pre-booked) are available.
The look
The international and domestic terminal facilities had a complete renovation unveiled in 2018, including major airside extensions and a vast new departures hall. The project involved significant structural changes and a complete makeover of 25,000 square metres of floor space including retail, lounges, airline gates and public facilities. The domestic terminal, a short stroll from the international terminal, was upgraded and extended too. A further $3 billion upgrade and expansion of the airport was announced at the end of 2019 – with plans to more than double the international terminal’s existing footprint – but there’s been no news since.
Security
I don’t pass through security on this flight as I’m in transit, but typically passengers are processed at a steady pace. Many times I’ve been wished a good flight or sent off with a “God bless you” which makes a nice change from other international ports.
Check-in
I’m not checking in for a flight (having checked in at Sydney Airport) but when I have done so at Nadi Airport, the check-in process is relatively painless depending on whether it’s school holidays or another peak holiday period. One of the things I love about Nadi Airport is the large groups of extended Fijian families seeing loved ones off. It’s typically a whole family affair and everyone from little ones to grandparents gathers at the airport. The mood is relaxed and fun. Before security Koko Nui cafe does a half decent coffee while Burger King does a roaring trade.
Food + drink
In the departures lounge Burger King has a second outlet and there’s also the Bula Bar Bistro and Gloria Jeans. Best advice is to eat before arriving at the airport, except if you are flying Fiji Airways (or partner airlines) at a level that gives you access to their flagship lounge. Best to arrive early and make the most of it. Located down a flight of stairs or escalator, this tasteful lounge comes complete with vertical garden, star-studded roof and timber edges. There are showers (you need to book at the bar) and there’s also a bar where friendly bartenders mix up rather strong G&Ts. Food is buffet-style and there’s decent Wi-Fi. There’s also a kid’s playroom and a large video wall. If a game of rugby is playing anywhere in the world you can be guaranteed all eyes will be on the screens here.
Retail therapy
The main duty-free shops include Prouds, Tappoo, Nike and a toy store. You can pick up souvenirs, competitively priced alcohol and stock up on Pure Fiji products which make great last-minute gifts.
Passing time
There’s not a lot to do in the departures lounge (the airport finally offers free Wi-Fi) so my tip if you’re not a Tabua Club or partner airline member would be to pay $FJD99 ($65) and access the Fiji Airways lounge. Alternatively, utilise the Air New Zealand lounge if you have access. One of the best things about arriving at Nadi Airport is the three-piece band including ukulele that serenades passengers as they pass through immigration. Often staff shepherd families with small children to the front of the queue which I love to see.
The verdict
Expect no frills and a relatively seamless experience. If you’re flying Fiji Airways, you can now check in for your flight at several resorts including the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa, Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa, Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort with other resorts to come. This means you can check in to your Nadi flight while checking out of your accommodation. Passengers are issued a boarding pass and reunited with their luggage at their destination. As the Fijians say, “Sega na leqa” (no worries). See airportsfiji.com
