Rising to the challenge

Justin Vihinen always knew he was a capable student – and good results confirmed his ability with the courses he had been studying.

“Up until the end of Year 10, I was quite capable – I was getting top grades in my subjects,” said Vihinen, 18, from Rozelle.

But, in Year 11, Vihinen had mental health challenges that took him away from school for three months.

He says a psychologist recommended HSC Pathways, to support him completing his education.

HSC Pathways, or completing your HSC over multiple years, is an option for students who may be unable to meet the HSC requirements in one year.

This could be due to health concerns or treatment, working or caring for family, or participating in demanding activities including professional sports.

“The added flexibility has been a great benefit to me. My teachers are really responsive and supportive which has helped me get to where I want to be,” Vihinen said.

Vihinen continued his studies in Year 11 then completed the HSC Maths Advanced course. This year, he hopes to complete Biology, English Advanced, Legal Studies, and Society and Culture.

Vihinen works part-time and hopes to eventually save for a home deposit. He also has his sights set on university: “I wish to pursue a career in zoology – particularly conservation zoology. That’s something I’m very passionate about and have been since I was very young.”

Vihinen says distance education is a great option for many students, but it’s not for everyone.

“Some may not respond well to the need for greater self-direction,” he said.

“For some it would do wonders. Much of the learning is self-guided without a lot of intervention, so some may feel there’s less support for them.”

But for Vihinen, HSC Pathways was the right move: “I’m still enrolled and attending so for me, that’s success.”
